This is one of the several different receptors for 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin), a biogenic hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and a mitogen. This receptor is a ligand-gated ion channel, which when activated causes fast, depolarizing responses. It is a cation-specific, but otherwise relatively nonselective, ion channel.

(B) The quantitative analysis of 5-HT3A receptor expression in BDL rats. (C) Intrathecal administration of bilirubin increased 5-HT3A receptor expression without changing other subtypes. (D) The quantitative analysis of 5-HT3A receptor expression after intrathecal administration of bilirubin in normal rats. (E) SDHNs cultured with bilirubin showed increased 5-HT3A receptor expression without changing other subtypes. (F) The quantitative analysis of 5-HT3A receptor expression in SDHNs. (G) Immunofluorescence showed that 5-HT3A receptor expression increased in laminas I and II in the spinal cords of BDL rats.
